We’re going to talk a little bit about the materials we’re going to need to paint the exterior eaves on our house. Whenever you’re painting exterior eaves on the house there is some prep work to do here. Prep works means you need a couple of items to be sure to do the job properly. Prep work entails caulking and spackling.

When you’re buying caulking you do want to pick up something that is an acrylic latex caulk. It can have a drop or two in silicone and most of them do, but don’t mistake that with pure silicone caulking. Pure silicone caulking will not paint. You’re just never going to be able to get a paint to stick to it. A little bit of silicone in there is fine, but be sure it’s an acrylic latex and get the brilliant white.

The brilliant white is what you use for painting. That way you can see where all of your lines are, and the clear stuff you use once you’re just kind of covering up a crack that’s not going to get painted. So you want to buy the acrylic latex. It may have a drop of silicone in it, but not the pure silicone, and be sure that it is the brilliant white and not the clear. Then we’re going to get some light weight spackling. I use the lightweight spackling because it’s easy to sand, it dries really really fast, and you can even work it a little with your fingers in the corners for cracks and stuff you might have missed with your caulking. Then we’re going to do a little priming. Whenever we’re priming the surface you want to use a good latex primer when you’re using a latex paint like we are today.

This is a good latex primer that will cover up very, very well. Then we can paint a latex paint on it and we’re not going to have any problems. Today in the series we’ll talk a little bit about the differences between paints, but today we’re using an acrylic latex semi-gloss on the exterior eaves so we’re going to use a good latex primer to be able to cover up any of the stains or mildew spots. Finally, your finish coat will be an acrylic semi-gloss enamel. Semi-gloss has sort of a sheen to it but it’s not like a high gloss.

It’s not going to be really really brilliant or make the light dance on it, but it will make it stand out a little bit. You don’t want to use something flat, that’s not going to work. You want to be able to use something that’s going to bring them out a little bit, but not be so bright that it makes the sun bounce off of it. Exterior acrylic latexes are very very good and they’re gotten better as the years have gone by in that they have practically replaced oil paints entirely. Some places still will use oil and you will find a lot of times the surface you’re painting was painted in oil before. Don’t just paint over that straight with a new latex because you will have a problem. Be sure you sand that down extremely smooth before you do that.

Get it nice and sanded down, really rough it up, and get all that old sheen off of it. If you don’t, nothing is ever going to stick to it. Oil paint used to be the standard so a lot of times when you’re painting, you’re going to find it was an oil painted surface. You’re going to want to change that out and come up with the times and modernize a little bit and get that turned over to the acrylic latex, which will do the job perfectly for you. That’s why it’s important to use a good solid latex primer to assure that everything does stick well. So use an acrylic latex and I also recommend a semi-gloss enamel that way it’s not going to be too shiny, but you don’t wan it flat so it disappears.

That’ll bring your eaves out a little bit. These are all the materials that you’re going to need to paint the exterior eaves on your house.
